Music is salve for the soul.
No bromide could be more true.
The beauty in the universe of music is that it offers something for everyone; and live concerts are, in this writer’s opinion, one of the great joys of living life.
Evangeline and I were treated to a fantastic concert by a band we knew nothing about until they were advertised on the Lowell Summer Music Series. We decided to try something new so we bought tickets for a Friday night. KALEO is a fantastically talented band from Iceland, and the listener is going to be treated to some great Americana music. I initially thought the front man was trying to channel Stevie Ray Vaughn, but he and his band provided a wholly original interpretation of what one might say is a seamless integration country-folk-western-Texas blues rock. Let me tell you. These guys rock. Front man Jökull Júlíusson provides the solid vocals (with a damn good range) and lead/rhythm guitar that compliment the band’s talented rhythm section.
But if they have what could be called a secret weapon, it’s Þorleifur Gaukur Davíðsson…I’m lost on the pronunciation…a multi-instrumentalist with fantastic skills and musicality on the harmonica. Watching his physically dynamic investment in each song, as he pushed the strains of the harp to the lead, gave me chills. What I was seeing and hearing reminded me of Magic Dick’s performance in what was, for Evangeline and I, a mind blowing J.Geils concert at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium years ago. Mr. Davíðsson’s quality was every bit on par, with an originality that was entirely his own. KALEO is touring, so if they come by somewhere near again give them a try.
Thus far, we've seen Dream Theater at Radio City Music Hall in NYC, and a few shows at the Taffeta Music Hall: The Cold Stares (twice), Gong, David Cross (former member of King Crimson), along with Fleetwood Mac tribute band Rumors.
More to come!
